Creating a Beloved Community

Martin Luther King, Jr. often spoke of creating a fully inclusive beloved community and he used the transformational leadership style in forwarding his own dreams of this. I believe this should be our end goal for the new energy coming in. In order to succeed, we need to be able to empower everyone around us to reach their full potential. The purpose of a leader should never be to mold others into their image, but to give them the tools that enable them to outgrow the need for guidance.

We currently live in a world where that is becoming increasingly more difficult. With the rise in ego-centric leaders and cult like religious groups, people who need support are not getting what they need. The current government in the United States is also doing what it can to slowly take away the rights of anyone who doesn’t fit their idea of the perfect citizen.

I am LGBT, female, and disabled. In 1995 I wrote a proposal for a housing community that would provide homes and supportive services for those who needed a safe place and the skills to be able to create a life based on their dreams and hopes. It was particularly focused on those with disabilities, such as autoimmune syndromes which often leave you able to do some things as long as there’s an opportunity for frequent breaks.

It seems that, right now, there’s a huge need to create this community. COVID left us with more disabled individuals, more mental health struggles, and the lack of communal support. It also provided us with more opportunities for virtual work if the support is there to individualize the work experience. As the world evolves to be more equitable for all, so would the concept behind this proposal.

At this time, we need all the help we can get. It will require forming a nonprofit, finding the land, and creating a proposal that will get us seen.
